Westport Docks

In today's painting, I massed the main areas of this painting just fine, but somehow the most challenging part was in getting the warm and cool colors to stay put! I'd be happy with one area, then later go back and try to adjust the temperature without asking why!.I think I was second guessing myself in thinking about blues being cool and the browns being warm. But, as I've posted before, the question has to revolve around the temperatures of lights and darks for each area or object. I think I got it straightened out.

Fishing New Water

I was inspired by Julie Ford Oliver to use Pthalo blue on my palette today. It's such a strong color and I tried to keep it under control by using a limited triad with it. This was yellow ochre pale, pthalo blue and terra rosa with just a touch of ultramarine blue here and there. This was a good trio for this scene with all the rusty colored grasses and cool light. And, I was reminded of how versatile Pthalo can be in mixing both greens and violets!

Washday In Paradise

I did this from a picture taken when we were in Hawaii a few years ago. It made me think about how, when in a new place, we notice all sorts of things that seem more mundane at home. Maybe it's the light, or just the fact that we are open to everything being new and wonderful!  Our eyes are somehow refreshed. At any rate, this line of colorful wash under the palms caught my eye

Desert & Sky

A simple palette again today while I enjoyed painting the subtleties of this landscape. A blue sky, long ochre grasses and clouds swirling through seemed enough as I played with soft edges and contrast. I wanted to bring the 2 parts together in a better way and I did that by mixing some blue with the grasses. That cooled them and brought them into harmony with the sky.

Cat On The Pond

Across our backyard there is a pond. And on the far edge of the pond, this cat comes down every day to check out whatever might be around and about. It sits quietly sometimes for long periods of time contemplating the water and long grasses. I think this is the first cat I've ever put in a painting, but maybe not the last, it was very fun.

Horse & Cart

Another title for this might have been "Where's the Party?" but at any rate it was fun and colorful to put together. I took the reference for this while in Solvang, CA. but added the lantern shapes above, for color and more of a party feel. It is basically structured in brown monochromatic values and I added color that would add a little contrast . I guess I'm still working out of the 30 in 30 challenge to some extent in painting from my imagination!

Four Bouys

A lot of fun with color today! This is from a pic I took a few years ago in Kodiak, Ak. I was  walking the docks with a friend and all the huge fishing boats gave us great reflections and in this case, some wonderful color from bouys hanging alongside. It is one I've meant to play with for a long time and today must have been the right day because it just felt together..... nice when that happens.

Winter Fisher

I've been under the weather lately but managed to do a bit of painting and enjoyed the result with this 'winter fisher'.And, here is a painting hint as well.... I had to wipe out an area of the paint when part of a mix got cloudy. So this time I tried a square of cheese cloth with Gamsol and it came off just great leaving no lint or paper bits behind. Even with my fav Viva paper towels I've had issues when the paint is thicker, so this was a nice little discovery for me. I read about using cheese cloth to oil out a touch dry painting so it gave me this idea which I'll definitely use again.

Collage for the 30 in 30 Challenge

So I am finally posting a collage from Leslie Saeta's 30 in 30 Challenge. I finished 30 paintings but somehow Ipiccy was not co-operating with the format for 30 instead of 25! Anyway, I thought at the third try, I would just leave it as is. If you care to see larger photos, just click on the numbers below to link to each painting on my website.  My take-away from the challenge is that the theme was the hardest part. It kind of hemmed me in far more than I would have realized. It was good to have a deliberate schedule I was obligated to though when you paint regularly, it doesn't change things in a huge way. All in all, I'm glad I got through it as I've been meaning to join the '30/30 club' for awhile!
