Day On The River

Day On The River    watercolor on illustration board        6" x 10"
I've been wanting to come up with materials that would be easier to pack when travelling. Specifically, when room, time or circumstance during the trip doesn't allow for my oil set up. For many years, I painted in watercolor and am having fun with it again, while reducing the amount of items to pack. I've used the paint here, both in transparent and opaque passages, adding white to some mixes. This is on a slightly textured archival illustration board. I painted a thin coat on matte varnish on it before painting. Once dry, it allows for wiping out areas or building up layers.

Slideshow Demo- oil painting "Perfect Compliments"

Slideshow Demo-- Perfect Compliments (see yesterday's post)

This is the step by step for yesterday's post, Perfect Compliments.
1.- drawing of the basic shapes in pencil and thin black marker (erase out the pencil)
2.-wash the drawing using transparent red oxide and oms
3.- wipe out the lights with a brush or paper towel
4.- paint in the darks using transparent red oxide (no turps or oms)
5.- begin painting in the appropriate color masses, using the established underpainting for values.
6.- continue with edges and details once the main color/value areas are established.

Perfect Compliments - red floral in green pottery

Perfect Compliments        oil           8" x 10"
I have painted from this photo and sketch a couple times and keep coming back to it. The repeated roundy shapes and particular greens are just compelling somehow. I will be posting a slideshow demonstration of this and hope to have it up tomorrow. My last post talked about using a monochromatic painting plan first  and that's how I approached this one. Til then...

Lake Shore Backlight

Lake Shore Backlight              oil on canvas                8" x 10"
I worked a bit differently here, by first doing an underpainting of the main values and shapes. I used transparent oxide red and started with the darkest darks. Next time I try this, I'll will try to remember to take a few photos along the way. It was a fun way to work because once the value pattern and composition was down, I played with color in a way that felt a little more free and easy.

Market Flowers

Market Flowers                      8" x 8"                oil on linen panel
This is another view from the Farmer's market strolling the one of the main streets of Solvang, Ca. There was marvelous color under every canopy, but these stood ready and waiting in a bright spot of sun. I used a pink and sienna color washed onto the panel first. Then drew out the basics and painted in the darkest areas first.

Fall Harvest - at the farmer's market

Fall Harverst               oil on linen                               7" x 9"
Here is a fall still life that I saw in late August. I don't know whether that counts as fall exactly, but the farmer's market in California must have had early harvests. I tried to subdue the lights here and use a softer approach to the cool outdoor light. They were at a table that was under a white canopy, so the light was not too blinding or direct. This is one of those paintings that I visualized just as I took the photo, and the vision of what I was after held right through to the end.

Rusty Water

Rusty Water             oil on linen panel                         8" x 10"
It was good to get back to a daily painting today after not being able to for a week or so. These fallen trees were at the water's edge along the Yellowstone River last fall and the water had thick layers of leaves which turned the water rusty looking. I loved working with the blues of the shadows above and then the orange below....perfect compliments. On another note...I have a painting give away at the end of this month....check out the details in my latest newsletter.

"This Might Work....."

This Might Work...                 oil on linen panel           9" x 12"
I am away but still trying to post a bit when I have a chance and 'this might work' seems to be the way I'm trying to catch up. Trying a bit of this and a bit of that to eek out time and a connection. At any rate, hope you enjoy this one.
