Trail

Trail                           6"x 8"                oil on linen panel
A small landscape today while I continue to work on commissions and other obligations that are taking up a lot of time. This is a limited palette of ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, cad yell light, cad. red light, trans oxide red and white. Unusual for me because I typically don't use cer.blue, but I enjoyed the greens it created and the bright sky.

Box Canyon II

Box Canyon II                     oil                 8" x 10"
I worked with this idea in a square format a couple of months ago and now wanted to revisit it. The big shape of the water leading into the canyon seemed to work in a rectangle as well and I had fun with it. This is a view from out trip to Fort Smith Montana and the Big Hole river.

Minor Adjustments - Preparing to Dance

Minor Adjustments          10" x 8"             oil
I am working on a commission, but took time out today to 'play' with an unrelated image.
This is a dancer in Basque costume getting ready to perform at a festival in Boise. I loved the hot and cool reds where the shadows played across her headscarf. Fun and always one of my favorite subjects.

Santa Barbara Shopping

Santa Barbara Shopping      oil         10" x 8"
This is another view from recent travels where we spent an afternoon shopping in Santa Barbara. Oh, what a beautiful city! There are wonderful archways, lamps, trees and architecture throughout the beautiful downtown area. These three came sauntering through covered shopfronts, toward a nearby restaurant and I saw the possibility of a painting.

'Round The Bend' - and a few answers

'Round The Bend                 oil                     8" x 10"
My last post "Pink Flurry" got several nice comments (thanks!) and those came with questions as well. I love that because I tend not to write a lot in my posts, thinking I've just said it all before...so  thanks to Dean  and Julie for direction on this post. The paraphrased question .... "what is your best tip(s) for painting like this?"

1. Have an idea of what you'd like the finished work to look like.
2. Use an area of focus for the highest contrast, most pure color and hardest edges.
3. Don't give in to the 'happy accidents' unless they add to your focus.
4. Use an underpainting, to plan and keep the surface a little wet for soft edges, or use medium with your paint to help with smooth brushwork.

Having said all that, I cannot lie and tell you I am able to follow through on each of these, every time out! But, when I'm floundering, it helps to review these.
