Here's another painting inspired by Solvang and the many shops and building lining the streets. I tried to stay with the color I saw without creating too much of a 'candy box' feel,.That was a real challenge when they are all so varied and decorative. This was a particularly fun one, both for the colorful subjects and remembering the trip and the shopping!
I've just returned from a fun trip with two of my sisters to Solvang, CA.and surrounding areas. If you've never been there, it is a beautiful place that is modeled on a Danish village and it's easy to feel you are visiting a small European town. As we shopped the many storefronts, we came across Solvang Antiques and their many special treasures, both large and small. I noticed some paintings by Ted Goerschner, who's work I have always admired. I talked with a very knowledgeable woman who spent time visiting about a gallery she had and some of the pieces in the store. It was such an inviting and gorgeous place! Don't miss it if you have the opportunity. This still life was from an entry table just inside their door.
This is from a wonderful field of sunflowers just over the WA/ID border in Deer Park. I used a different surface for this one when I grabbed a gesso'd MDF board and began these sunflowers in color patches. This is a board with a routered border, so it has an edge, like a frame that is cut into it and stained deep umber. That makes it easy to set on the easel it comes with, hang 'as is' or frame separately. With a whole field of color, you hardly know where to look first, so I focused on a few with the bright, light yellow they are known for. Pictures of the painting and board edge are below.
This is the commission I've been recently working on. Pictured are twin daughters enjoying a day out on the river. This was done from a small work that I first painted as a plan from some photos that were provided to me. I combined those with landscaping and river images that I thought would enhance the figures and work with the composition.
I have a another set of paintings for you to peruse at DPW Auctions as I continue to organize and clear studio space. Just click the numbers below to view the full image and auction page. I hope you find a favorite to bid on !
Well, I've been so lax with my blog posts lately! We have been travelling and since being back, I've been working on a commission. But, today I took a break from that to remember this sky overhead in Eagle, Idaho. It was a one of those days, where distant clouds billowed throughout the hot day. I loved these for their edge of bright light.
