Swallowtails- slideshow painting demonstration

Swallowtails                 oil                   8" x 10"
So, here is the slideshow that shows my painting progression for yesterday's post "Swallowtails". As usual, I wish I had taken more slides, but I always get caught up in the painting process! For this one I didn't start with a toned canvas because I knew there would be a lot of light values and I wanted to keep them pure, unless intentionally mixing grays. Yellows an get 'dirty' very fast! You'll see that every section starts with laying in the shadow pattern before moving on to color and then light mixes. The blue drawing that you see at the beginning is just a cheapy thin  marker. It gave me a loose drawing to follow without getting too detailed. When I layed in color, I tried to think about the direction of the paint stroke and placement of subtle light and dark values. I could have gone a little crazy with more of the bright orange, but kept it in the focus area. Hope you enjoy it.

Swallowtails - butterflies and flickering gold

Swallowtails                          oil                             8" x 10"
While on our last trip, we saw this group of Swallowtail butterflies on the edge of the water and across a small bridge. I was quite sure they would be gone by the time I was in picture range, but in fact, they stayed waiting. I got several shots and enjoyed the show of flickering wings. The effect created super little dashes of color in deep and pale gold. I took pictures while I painted this too and will post a slideshow of the steps soon. Below is a painting detail shot and the original photo that provided inspiration.

Hollyhock Garden

Hollyhock Garden          oil             10" x 8"
Flowers have been taking a back seat to other subjects for awhile and I just had to get my 'fix'! I've been seeing a lot of Hollyhocks lately and one of the things that is so great about them is that they like the heat. Good thing, because it is hot everywhere right now! I can still look at these and feel cool(er) and refreshed though.

Summer Storm

Summer Storm                            oil                               6" x 8"
After a hot day, this is the kind of sky that promises rain and a cool breezy evening, but then.......? sometimes it just disappears and leaves us with a memory and turning on the air conditioning. This was fun because I knew I wanted  an intense water reflection of blue in the backlit landscape and it worked out just as in my imagination. The original sky reference was from a hot late afternoon sky on our last trip - the rain did appear, but only in the tantalizing distance.

Box Canyon Reds

Box Canyon Reds               acrylic on linen              6" x 8"
This is another of the many views from our trip to Montana. This was taken about mid-morning and the light was changing at every turn. I mentioned yesterday that I've been thinking of using acrylic for smaller works and decided to put that into practice today.

Connection! Fly Fishing & Catching - Big Horn river

Connection!                                oil                               8" x 8"
This year's trip to Montana had some excellent fishing and catching, and while the weather was hot, it's always a great place to be. I am going to experiment with acrylic next time I work plein aire and am looking forward to the challenge. My intent is to speed drying for transport and not pack any solvents on a longer trip. When I paint over about 30", I frequently use acrylic and enjoy the change. I use a Sta Wet palette and it works great to keep the paint workable, making it easy to store for several days.

"How To" for a Simple Collage Post

I'm am back from travels and other responsibilities but hope to post new work soon. Meanwhile, I had a few  questions about how I put together my collage posts, such as the last one or those I did with my cloud and fly fishing paintings. It is really very straightforward and easy.

I first decide on a theme and go to ipiccy.com which is a free online photo editor. Then, just upload the photos you want to use and follow each tab for the type and number of collage images. Now, you can easily drag and drop pictures into your chosen format. In the next tab, you can adjust and use text, which is where I added a number onto each image block in one of several offered formats and colors. Next, save it to your computer. Now, in Blogger or WordPress just upload the collage image, type the corresponding numbers underneath, and link each number to your webpage or larger blog post. Voila! You have several works linked together in a single post.

I think you'll find it fun to work with, and hope this explanation helps out. Thanks to all of you who continued to follow my work and comment while I've been away. Pin It

Sunset- Montana

Sunset- Fort Smith, Montana           8" x 10"       oil
I tried to capture the great sky from last evening's sunset in this one. It had a long column of pink that rose into the sky like a big feather. Very colorful and unusual...what a lovely way to end another great day here.
