Black Canyon- Fort Smith, Montana

Black Canyon                               oil                               8"x 8"
Today I took some good advice and painted this indoors instead of painting out and opting for heat stroke! We had just come back from a great morning of boating and fishing in the Black Canyon at Fort Smith, Montana. The myriad of colors and shapes had me snapping photos every few minutes and this painting was inspired from one of those.

Cottonwood Sketch- plein air in Montana

Cottonwood Sketch                8" x 10"                       oil
I was painting plein air today and these are some of the many groups of Cottonwood trees near the Big Horn river in Montana.
It is around 90, so I was feeling pretty toasty out there and nearly melting into my shoes! More how weather, scouting with a camera and maybe painting tomorrow.

On Vacation

On Vacation                            oil                            8" x 8"
This silver Airstream came to a stop ahead of us and seemed to be pondering which way to turn for the longest time. It was...right blinker, left blinker....... Behind the wheel, there was probably much discussion on who had the correct directions to get to a particular destination. But maybe there was no plan and they were tossing a coin to see which way would lead to the most interesting adventure ahead!

Grand Ronde Spey

Grand Ronde Spey                    oil                         8" x 10"
This is friend, Steve casting a spey rod, which I've never tried my hand a painting before. It's a good thing I have a technical expert close at hand! This rod looks to me like one is casting a heavy tree branch and I know  takes a lot of practice, Regarding the painting, I was happy with the clean brighter shapes of the foliage in the background and the main lines of the composition leading to fly fisherman.
This one is SOLD but you can View Others on my website.

Heading Out

   Heading Out                       16" x 20"                                   oil
I enjoyed every minute of painting both this and the original work which was small and in a square format. First of all, when I first snapped a series of shots of these two, it immediately created a story in my mind about their anticipation of a great day on the water. In this larger painting, I was able to paint with more depth of color and throw in more of the scattered wildflowers around the figures. And, as it turned out, it reminded a fly fisher out there of  fishing memories with one of his daughters and he bought the original and commissioned this larger work as a gift. It just doesn't get better than that! This one is sold, but you can view other fly fishing works on my website.

Violet Iris

Violet Iris                    oil                 8" x 6"
It's Iris time- and this first little painting is about the very close values between the violets and greens in the painting. I created a pattern of lighter leaves and background to contrast with the flowers. And, the greens are generally grayer in color to allow the blues and violets to stand out.

Home Place

Home Place                            8" x 10"                              oil
I am looking forward to soon being able to paint the big sky country of Montana again. This is one from there on a day where the light from the warm summer day also seemed to warm up the clouds. I used a bit of cad red to "pink up" the white cloud mixes in this landscape, or as I sometimes say 'skyscape'.

Fishing The Shadows II

Fishing The Shadows II                         oil                          8" x 11"
A quick post to start the week, and I can't believe July is half over! Hope everyone's Father's Day was a good one..

Flower Gems - bedding plants and color

I knew today I was ready for a change of pace and these flowers, ready to be planted just called out to me. As always, the first temptation is to paint every single flower and shape and spot of color...... but as my brush touches the canvas, I try to hear my inner voice saying  "less is more, less is more, less is more......." I still got quite a few in though... :)

Reflection On The River

Reflection On The River     oil           9" x 9"
The gravel bar in the river in this picture was a challenge, because I didn't want it to split the composition in two. My solution was to use an angle leading to the fisherman and I varied the edge of it for interest. The figure and his reflection cut through the line, so it stopped the eye and hopefully brings the viewer back in.

Fishing The Shadows

Fishing The Shadows              7" x 8"             oil-linen panel
The shadows in this painting would feel good right about now, as we start to get more summer like temps and longer days. I will post another fishing painting tomorrow that is larger (16" x 20". I've been working from a smaller painting that I enjoyed and thought successful.

Chance Of Showers - a little slice of sky

Chance Of Showers    oil    5.5" x 8.5"
Here's a small slice of sky from today. I'm also painting and planning other works that are a bit larger as well. Most artists I know feel the need to stretch now and then, whether through subject matter, approach or canvas size and that's true for me right now. This was a distant rain shower brewing as we drove north across Palouse farm land. While I know it's an odd size, it comes with it's own display easel so that you can enjoy without framing.

Two Basque Dancers

Two Basque Dancers         oil             10" x 8"
This is from a Basque Festival that took place in Boise in years past ( Jaialdi ) and these two dancers were getting all their costumes bits and pieces ready to go for a performance. I am really happy with the way the values, colors and movement of the piece came together as a whole.
I am posting while travelling and once again have a thread-like connect, so have to cut it short for now.
