Dappled Light Path

Dappled Light Path   8" x 10"      oil
You will have seen that another of my subject fascinations is with dappled light filtering through trees and wooded areas. While I always have an initial idea/ plan...these kinds of paintings take on a life of their own more so than any other! I just keep seeing the bits of light and color in my mind's eye and the editing is always a challenge. So, I try to keep my eye on the light path and here I enjoyed the challenge with a soft filtered effect.

Willapa Bay Boathouse

Willapa Bay Boathouse     6" x 8"         oil
This is from Willapa Bay on the Washington coast. I just had time for a small one today and always like the looks of the orange rusty roof against blue sky.

A House In The Country - imagination and a grain of truth

A House In The Country         8" x 10"         oil
This is painted from a blurred photo, taken while looking out the car window on a trip return. Sometimes you can catch just a fleeting idea of something, and that was the case here. The white house in the distance had just enough color in the rooftop to create nice contrast and the foreground was some type of lavender flower. If I were ever to have 'a house in the country', this is what my imaginings say it should look like....

Coast Light

Coast Light        oil          10" x 8"
I've been trying to concentrate on working with grays played against more pure colors. This is my latest painting using that idea and a photo I took from the coast.

Desert Light- framed as a special offer

Desert Light        oil          8" x 10"
I'm re-posting and older work today and one that I have always enjoyed as I liked the way the cool blue morning light gives it a 'fresh air' feel. I've decided to periodically post framed work as a special and offered at no extra price!  See it framed below

First Pick Lilacs

First Pick Lilacs                   oil            9"x7"
Our lilacs this year seems particularly deep in color and fragrant, but I probably think that's true every year :)  I hadn't worked from life for too long, and snipped these to paint, simply setting them up in a clear glass with a brown/gray drape behind. They lasted just long enough to paint that day and livened up my painting space wonderfully!

Oil Painting Demo- transparent & opaque paint-"Orchard Pears"

Pears Demonstration     oil
Several months ago I put together an ArtByte for Daily Paintworks and decided I would change the format into a slideshow and publish here too. It may be interesting for those of you who are not members there, or might want to see a few more stages of the painting. It basically covers the idea of using a transparent multicolored wash as an underpainting. After a brush sketch of the basic shapes, I painted over using varied opaque mixes. It's one of my favorite ways to work, because you can keep or discard "happy accidents" and it suggests interesting color mixes along the way. This painting is sold, but there are several using this same technique at my daily paintings and on my website .

Alicia in Basque Dress

Alicia, in Basque Dress           oil         18"x 14"
If you follow my work, this basic image and the model will look familiar from a smaller (5"x7") that I posted several months ago. The model is my niece and I wanted to enlarge and develop the work more, so that I could have fun with the color and brushwork that I could not include in a smaller version. This is not currently for sale, but you can View it Larger Here

Nasturtiums   oil    9" x 6"
I've been out all day with family celebrations, as many of you have been I'm sure. And now, in posting this painting done yesterday, my mind is blank, hence this really bland title! But, it was a fun one to paint and I was going for those bright blossoms and round layered leaves. The edges just kept bringing me back in to the circle of shapes. Happy Monday!

Redhead - slideshow painting demonstration

Redhead          oil             9" x 6"

I was reminded to put together a painting demo in the 30 marketing challenge by Leslie Saeta. It's been too long and thought 'oh, good idea!' Then, I proceeded to set up a painting on a surface I had never used before, which was particularly absorbent and really grabbed at every brush stroke. Hmmmm, seems like I kind of undermined myself on this one! I decided to post it though because my steps are basically the same as my usual process.

Planting Time - flowers ready for the garden

Planting Time              oil                  10"x 8"
Another floral today with some of those colorful larger blossoms in their boxes and ready to go. In your area, it may be that your annuals have been at your front door for a long time, but here the weather's been hit and miss. Now though, the sunny warm days have arrived and color is starting to show up everywhere.

Small Floral Mix

Small Floral Mix               oil                   7" x 71/2"
Here's a little bunch that is a mix of those small early flowers we see this time of year in all the garden centers. All the big containers of color will beckon later I know, but for now this little picture of small blossoms fit the day.

Fall River View - a repost for the Leslie Saeta Challenge

Fall River View                       7" x 9"                       oil
I am joining Leslie Saeta's 30 Day Marketing Challenge this month and our 'assignment' for today is to repost a painting that is older, for sale and a favorite. This is one for me because the blue water had just enough gray to produce nice depth and the swirling motion of the water gives it nice movement into the composition. I also like the single flame of fall color in the sweet spot mid-way  on the right. One of those paintings that came together perfectly for me!

There's Still No Place Like Home

There's Still No Place Like Home           oil            8"x 10"
This painting has a bit of a story with it, but the short version is that I painted one similar before and had enough fun with it, that I painted it a second time. I changed the expressions on these chicks and thought they looked comfortable and happy as nesting neighbors!
My May newsletter is out today and you can check it out here.
