Under The Arbor

Under The Arbor         oil          8"x 8"
Several years ago we had a yellow lab, who got into everything and was usually very high energy. This is from one of her rare times of relaxation! It was a hot summer day and we were visiting my father-in-law who had a grape arbor at the back doorway of his house. The leafy shade over the cool cement walkway made it a perfect place for her to relax and still keep an eye on all the important goings on. Good memories...

Street View - keeping an eye out, Above It All

Above It All       oil            7"x 5"
I painted this a couple weeks ago, but somehow never got around to posting. This lady was perusing everything below in the bustling streets of San Pedro, Belize. I'll bet she has a new story or bit of gossip every day, about all she sees from the street view above it all!

Light Path - sunlit view through the woods

Light Path              12" x 16"            oil
I've worked with this photo before and it was one I took in Yellowstone Park. I really enjoy the light path behind what you might consider to be the main subject of the trees. It gave depth to the image and a way to lead the eye around the composition. I've been working with another large canvas as well and hope to post that in the coming week.

A Golden Day's End

A Golden Day's End              18" x 18"           oil
My head is in the clouds these days with both small and large works. This is an unusual color scheme for me to work with and I enjoyed a yellow sky for a change. I worked a lot from imagination here.

Sweet Sky , Happy Valentine's Day and an Interview

Sweet Sky                20" x 16"          oil
This is actually a re-post of this painting, with a couple of adjustments to the water in value and color. But, I thought it appropriate for Thursday - Happy Valentine's Day! I also wanted to mention my interview with Craig Shillam, who kindly asked me to be a part of his BLOG this week. Craig's work is wonderful and you'll enjoy discovering the work of this talented Spokane artist. Thanks Craig for your kind words and generosity!

Shadow Study

In The Shadows                         8" x 10"                       oil
I enjoyed working with blue reflected shadows in this. Whenever I work with this type of scene, the challenge for me is always grouping the many shapes of trees and foliage into one or two main shapes. And while that can be difficult in many subjects, it's particularly difficult in trees for some reason!  I'm happy with the grouping of these and the bits of red in the small flowers.

Pasture Pals

Pasture Pals           oil                10" x 8"
When thinking about a title for this, I nearly decided on "Should we smile?" because they seemed to be posing for this picture as cows so often seem to. I like to think their conversation might be packed with witty observations about the rest of the world as it goes by. This is a spring day with long grass coming up and mixed with small wildflowers to decorate their view.

Swept Away - developing large work from a small painting.

Swept Away                 30" x 60"                    acrylic        sold
You might be thinking this is a re-post, but it is a larger version of an earlier painting. I mentioned awhile back that I have been working on a commission of Swept Away and thought I would post it today instead of a daily painting. This is done in layers with acrylic from the original oil. Working from a smaller painting is a definite plus. With all your planning and decision making done, you can really enjoy the process of painting in a more freeing way. On the other hand, there is more blending and detail work to be done and I didn't want to lose the motion of the original. You can see a larger photo HERE

Sweet Treat

Sweet Treat                           oil                         7" x 7"
So, we're all seeing those flowers and chocolates out there for Valentine's Day and I certainly felt I had an obligation to do a bit of research for this painting. After all, it was really about time I worked directly from the subject right?? So, I won't go on about the fragrance of chocolate wafting through my studio today but, I'd like to point out that this painting has a lot fewer calories in it than the real thing!
