Compliments - more flowers and a color scheme

Compliments                          oil                              7" x 7"
My enthusiastic Congrats to all of you who completed 30 day challenges this month. There have been some amazing results and wonderful paintings for us to enjoy.
More flowers today and this is from a bouquet that is one of my favorites from the past. This is a favorite of mine for it's complimentary color scheme.  And the bright outdoor light keeps bringing it back to me. I am also attracted to this particular chunky piece of pottery. It's kind of ashen on the bottom and glazed on top. The whole thing just says "paint me!"

Begonia Blossoms - a floral for (nearly) February

Begonia Blossoms       oil         12"x 9"
As I mentioned yesterday, I have been missing flowers and now with February and Valentine's Day right around the corner....well, I couldn't resist! They are catching my eye for color. These are from Manito Park last spring in Spokane and the colorful bunches just went on and on. Of course the challenge is to decide where the focus will be and I enjoy looser brushwork in much of the composition.

A Day On The River

A Day On The River                oil                7" x 9"
One more fly fishing painting before changing it up, as I feel flowers beckoning me I think. At any rate, this is clearly a spring/summer scene on the river and I was happy with the depth and composition overall. I may change the intensity of the water, but need to take a fresh look tomorrow I think. Your thoughts?....

Success! fly fishing and catching, Northwest landscape

Success!                            oil                  10" x 8"
Here's another fly fisher for you and with the catch nearly at hand. I enjoyed putting together the shapes for the figure as well as the swirling water here, and tried to get it more transparent and gold around the figure to bring it forward. Once again, I thought I'd post a detail and black and white version below.

Fishing Upriver

Fishing Upriver                       oil                   8" x 8"
Another fishing trip today and this was from a trip last fall. I worked on a more textured linen here and you will notice the thicker paint and texture of the surface generally. Today I thought I'd take a page from some other art blogs and post a detail view and a black and white for values. Hope you find them interesting comparisons.

Silver Light -late afternoon Priest Lake Winter

Silver Light                       oil                       8" x 8"
I hope you've had a good and restful weekend. Today, I am posting this late evening winter landscape from the Priest Lake area and from my imagination. I wanted it to be built on subtle grays and still have  some color be a part of the warm/cool mix of light.

Basque Figure Study

Basque Figure Study         8" x 6"      oil
I've been thinking about more larger pieces using costumed figures and to that end, worked with this one today. I think I'd like to put two or three together and have to keep mulling the composition over in my mind. This girl posed for me during one of the Basque Festivals in Boise (Jaialdi) a few summers back.

Balancing Act - fly fishing and other plein air pursuits

Balancing Act                   oil                     8"x 8"
So, fly fishing is not just tying on the right fly, just as plein air painting isn't just getting the color and shapes right! It's the wind, the rain, the heat and/or cold.....and it's frequently having a precarious foot hold, like this guy, on slippery rocks in rushing water. Oh, the fun of the our various pursuits.... perhaps it's overcoming it all that really keep us going!

Fair Day

Fair Day       oil            16" x 14"
I'll take you to the fair today with this post in hopes that it's a nice break from the cold temps you might be having. This is from a very old photo I'd taken and always knew I wanted to paint. Somehow, I'd never gotten around to it and this week.... it just felt right. I used a triad of alizarin, cad yellow deep and pthalo blue for the mixes and wanted a warm feel while holding together all the action and shapes. Currently, not for sale but you can.... View Other Daily Paintings

Garden Figure

Garden Figure         16" x 12"       oil
This is a change of pace in both size and subject. I had fun painting this costumed figure (Alicia) in an outdoor pose. I changed the setting to match the feel of her costume better. I may re-post the photo tomorrow if I get a shot with clearer edges. It's always frustrating to photograph those darks!

Through Palm Fronds - Belize ocean view

Through Palm Fronds                    7" x 6"                        oil
Tired of the tropics yet? I hope not, because this is one more view that I caught while beach walking. The slice of red drew my eye right through the palms, toward the water and horizon. Or at least what you can see of the horizon. The water and sky are so much the same value and color there, that the horizon nearly disappears. I have found that I really enjoy painting the negative shapes of the fronds, after blocking in the big idea, and they don't get too "fussy".

San Pedro Commute - a town view in San Pedro

San Pedro Commute                      oil               8" x 10"
There is a fair amount of traffic in San Pedro, and much of the rush are the bicycles traversing back and forth along the narrow streets and in front of brightly painted shops. This is one of those riders....

San Pedro Beach House

San Pedro Beach House        8" x 7"           oil
Blocks of color continued to catch my eye last week, in and around the town. Whether a fence, boat or  painted house front, color abounds! I liked this for it's abstract quality, and the shadow and light playing throughout from the waving palm fronds.

On Belizian Time - enjoying the view

On Belizian Time    oil        9"x 6"
I don't know whether this woman was waiting for a friend or a drink or she just wanted to sit for awhile, but I so identified with her. You can always find a perch to wait and have a good people watching time, or find a view to the ocean. Perhaps she was waiting for a Belikan, which is the local brew or a rum and coke at the San Pedro bar/deck she sat in. But, I can tell you for sure, she was in no hurry to move on......

Afternoon Beach Walk

Afternoon Beach Walk                    8" x 10"         oil
This is my first post from our trip to San Pedro, Belize. We were lucky to travel with family and it was a super trip all around with many memories! I had a couple afternoons where a beach walk seemed to beckon and the blue shadows from waving palms drew me down to the water's edge and back to the shadows over and over. Makes me want to be digging my toes into that sand even now...

Misty Morning

Misty Morning                       8"x 10"                           oil
We have just returned from San Pedro, Belize, but I have not had a chance to get to the brushes yet. I am posting one I finished before we left and hope to be painting from the trip soon. Thank you to all of you who commented and continued to follow my Christmas Santas and New Year's paintings.

This one is a much cooler palette than I usually use, and after being in the colorful world of Belize, my eyes are telling me it's nearly black and white!! I admire all of you starting painting challenges this month... I congratulate you all!
