Sunset For The Year's End

Sunset For The Year's End         6" x 8"         oil on linen
I am back with a little time to paint again. And first, just want to say 'thanks' to those who kept up in my absence and enjoyed my holiday posts and Santas. I thought a sunset would be an appropriate image to end the year, as I got familiar with my 'painting brain' again. Also, just a reminder that I am still offering free shipping until the end of the year.

Parasol On Front Street

Parasol On Front Street      8" x 10"       oil on linen panel
This is from one of the main streets in San Pedro, Belize where this lady was all dressed up and carrying the most lovely pink parasol. She was striking and I loved painting her. Hope you enjoy her 'look' and the energy I tried to portray in the figure.

New Paint!

Reflected Gold            8" x 8"         oil on linen panel

I wanted to let you know how my recent paint order has worked out, as I've had the chance to use them on my last 2 paintings. I finally decided to find out what the Classic Oil Colors (Dana Oil pants) were really like and read about them on Ken Auster's site as well as some others.  I loved the idea of a paint that is softer right out of the tube, without using  medium. And, that is exactly what I got. I ordered Auster's   palette suggested for his workshop, so I can't say whether every color has exactly the same consistency. The smallest tube is 4 oz. Two larger sizes are available as well.

The paints have good color saturation and covering power in the opaques, which works for me because in adding medium, I sometimes lose both of those qualities. The handling is smooth and not sticky as with some other paints. My paintings take longer to dry and that takes a little getting used to. I would say it is at least 2 days longer to the 'touch dry' stage. Right now, I am very happy with them and enjoying the new feel in my brushwork. Pin It

Back Light - fishing in Kodiak

Back Light                                      oil                                 8" x 10"
I really liked the way the light created a strong contrast against the fisherman's back on this one. My idea was to have the water just kind of melt into the scene and let the light to be the actor, so to speak. This kind of painting is one of the most difficult for me to get a good photo of....but the dark green grays and creamy whites are pretty accurate, on my screen at least.

"Ready To Dance"

Ready To Dance     10" x 8"           oil
As mentioned before, I enjoy painting dancers in traditional costume and dress periodically. This is a dance costume from one of the groups that came over from Spain for a Basque festival (Jaialdi) a few years ago. The red and white is always so festive any time of year, and it's always fun.

Day's End

Day's End                             oil                                    8" x 6"
I'm trying to ignore some kind of flu/cold combination that has been gradually coming on, so only had the concentration for a small one. I used a cad. red light stain under this and was happy to play off the color to create this end of day warm light. Maybe tomorrow will be a marvelous recovery day and I'll take on something of a larger challenge!

The Promise of Packages... a Newsletter and New Paint

The Promise of Packages                   oil                12" x 12"
It occurs to me that the painting I should have used for my last post on free shipping was this one, which is a favorite of mine. But, I'll use it today just as a reminder. I myself am waiting for a package filled with paint today - always very exciting! It's a new brand for me and if I like it I will post on the results.

Late Night Pizza -Santa Barbara dining out

Late Night Pizza                      oil on linen panel              8" x 8"
I'm taking you back to a summer night in August for this one. We were in Santa Barbara having a patio dinner where part of the show was this chef who came out to fire up the pizzas in an open air brick oven. He kindly posed and waved when he saw me taking pictures. But, I certainly preferred this one, of him cooking up something delicious!

Between the rain storms, I spied this charming pink bungalow hidden behind green bushes with it's own  palm umbrella. Fast Sky - billowing clouds in a pink sky

Fast Sky               8" x 8"              oil on linen
It feels good to be back painting and today I began with this late day sky. Powerful clouds built up over the ocean on our first day in San Pedro and they changed and moved through quickly, only to be replaced by a darker more grayed version. These are the ones I'll remember though, it was beautiful, if fleeting...

Back from Belize- Coconuts, Swaying Palms & a travel painting set up

Coconuts         watercolor on illustration board       8" x 10"
$100- inquire through email for purchase

Breezy Palm     watercolor on illustration board       8" x 10"
$100- inquire through email for purchase

Well, it is back from Belize here and I have tons to catch up on! So what else is new....that is always the way. I thought I would post the 2 watercolors I did while the weather held. We had  monsoon-like rains for much of the trip. These two were painted from our front deck/balcony area.

Also, I thought I would show you my travel set up, because it was one of the smallest and most effective ways to take paint I've ever used! I got the palette just before I left (Michaels- about $12) it doesn't have the brand name on it or I would post that. But, it kept the paint fresh and wet day after day. It has a small rubber gasket that prevents leaking and I will most certainly use it again and try it with oils as well. In addition, I took a small box of watercolors and gouache, a tiny spray bottle, Luma opaque white for when I'm not working transparently and of course about 5 or 6 brushes.

That's it for now...laundry awaits .........

The beginnings of winter in this one, with a patch of light on the snow, and a fly fisherman at the center of it. And, this fisherman is enjoying it regardless of the temps. I've added a detail shot below.

Changing Flies

Changing Flies   oil    7"x16"
(detail- Changing Flies)

I am still traveling, but wanted to re-post one for Julie FordOliver who so kindly let me know she was missing my work! I remember withdrawals from her excellent paintings awhile back, and it's so great as an artist to hear people want more! Hope to be back painting and posting soon....

This one is a different format and this sparkling water and figure fit the bill. My aim was to use the movement of water and light as a guide through the the long composition. For me it enhances the feel of looking down into the picture and the sunny reflections.

Here is a re-post for you,as I am away for awhile. Enjoy.........

I love it when a blur of color just catches your eye, while you don't even know what the subject is. Then, best of all, it can become a subject for one of your next paintings. This was one of those blurs while traveling in California and it turned out to be a flurry of pink roses.

Day On The River

Day On The River    watercolor on illustration board        6" x 10"
I've been wanting to come up with materials that would be easier to pack when travelling. Specifically, when room, time or circumstance during the trip doesn't allow for my oil set up. For many years, I painted in watercolor and am having fun with it again, while reducing the amount of items to pack. I've used the paint here, both in transparent and opaque passages, adding white to some mixes. This is on a slightly textured archival illustration board. I painted a thin coat on matte varnish on it before painting. Once dry, it allows for wiping out areas or building up layers.

Slideshow Demo-- Perfect Compliments (see yesterday's post)

This is the step by step for yesterday's post, Perfect Compliments.
1.- drawing of the basic shapes in pencil and thin black marker (erase out the pencil)
2.-wash the drawing using transparent red oxide and oms
3.- wipe out the lights with a brush or paper towel
4.- paint in the darks using transparent red oxide (no turps or oms)
5.- begin painting in the appropriate color masses, using the established underpainting for values.
6.- continue with edges and details once the main color/value areas are established.

Perfect Compliments - red floral in green pottery

Perfect Compliments        oil           8" x 10"
I have painted from this photo and sketch a couple times and keep coming back to it. The repeated roundy shapes and particular greens are just compelling somehow. I will be posting a slideshow demonstration of this and hope to have it up tomorrow. My last post talked about using a monochromatic painting plan first  and that's how I approached this one. Til then...

Lake Shore Backlight

Lake Shore Backlight              oil on canvas                8" x 10"
I worked a bit differently here, by first doing an underpainting of the main values and shapes. I used transparent oxide red and started with the darkest darks. Next time I try this, I'll will try to remember to take a few photos along the way. It was a fun way to work because once the value pattern and composition was down, I played with color in a way that felt a little more free and easy.

Market Flowers

Market Flowers                      8" x 8"                oil on linen panel
This is another view from the Farmer's market strolling the one of the main streets of Solvang, Ca. There was marvelous color under every canopy, but these stood ready and waiting in a bright spot of sun. I used a pink and sienna color washed onto the panel first. Then drew out the basics and painted in the darkest areas first.

Fall Harvest - at the farmer's market

Fall Harverst               oil on linen                               7" x 9"
Here is a fall still life that I saw in late August. I don't know whether that counts as fall exactly, but the farmer's market in California must have had early harvests. I tried to subdue the lights here and use a softer approach to the cool outdoor light. They were at a table that was under a white canopy, so the light was not too blinding or direct. This is one of those paintings that I visualized just as I took the photo, and the vision of what I was after held right through to the end.

Rusty Water

Rusty Water             oil on linen panel                         8" x 10"
It was good to get back to a daily painting today after not being able to for a week or so. These fallen trees were at the water's edge along the Yellowstone River last fall and the water had thick layers of leaves which turned the water rusty looking. I loved working with the blues of the shadows above and then the orange below....perfect compliments. On another note...I have a painting give away at the end of this month....check out the details in my latest newsletter.

A small landscape today while I continue to work on commissions and other obligations that are taking up a lot of time. This is a limited palette of ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, cad yell light, cad. red light, trans oxide red and white. Unusual for me because I typically don't use, but I enjoyed the greens it created and the bright sky.

Box Canyon II                     oil                 8" x 10"
I worked with this idea in a square format a couple of months ago and now wanted to revisit it. The big shape of the water leading into the canyon seemed to work in a rectangle as well and I had fun with it. This is a view from out trip to Fort Smith Montana and the Big Hole river.

Santa Barbara Shopping      oil         10" x 8"
This is another view from recent travels where we spent an afternoon shopping in Santa Barbara. Oh, what a beautiful city! There are wonderful archways, lamps, trees and architecture throughout the beautiful downtown area. These three came sauntering through covered shopfronts, toward a nearby restaurant and I saw the possibility of a painting.

'Round The Bend' - and a few answers

'Round The Bend                 oil                     8" x 10"
My last post "Pink Flurry" got several nice comments (thanks!) and those came with questions as well. I love that because I tend not to write a lot in my posts, thinking I've just said it all  thanks to Dean  and Julie for direction on this post. The paraphrased question .... "what is your best tip(s) for painting like this?"

1. Have an idea of what you'd like the finished work to look like.
2. Use an area of focus for the highest contrast, most pure color and hardest edges.
3. Don't give in to the 'happy accidents' unless they add to your focus.
4. Use an underpainting, to plan and keep the surface a little wet for soft edges, or use medium with your paint to help with smooth brushwork.

Having said all that, I cannot lie and tell you I am able to follow through on each of these, every time out! But, when I'm floundering, it helps to review these.

Solvang Antiques

Solvang Antiques               7" x 9"         oil
I've just returned from a fun trip with two of my sisters to Solvang, CA.and surrounding areas. If you've never been there, it is a beautiful place that is modeled on a Danish village and it's easy to feel you are visiting a small European town. As we shopped the many storefronts, we came across Solvang Antiques and their many special treasures, both large and small. I noticed some paintings by Ted Goerschner, who's work I have always admired. I talked with a very knowledgeable woman who spent time visiting about a gallery she had and some of the pieces in the store. It was such an inviting and gorgeous place! Don't miss it if you have the opportunity. This still life was from an entry table just inside their door.

Sunflowers              oil on board        8" x 11"

This is from a wonderful field of  sunflowers just over the WA/ID border in Deer Park. I used a different surface for this one when I grabbed a gesso'd MDF board and began these sunflowers in color patches. This is a board with a routered border, so it has an edge, like a frame that is cut into it and stained deep umber. That makes it easy to set on the easel it comes with, hang 'as is' or frame separately. With a whole field of color, you hardly know where to look first, so I focused on a few with the bright, light yellow they are known for. Pictures of the painting and board edge are below.

Well, I've been so lax with my blog posts lately! We have been travelling and since being back, I've been working on a commission. But, today I took a break from that to remember this sky overhead in Eagle, Idaho. It was a one of those days, where distant clouds billowed throughout the hot day. I loved these for their edge of bright light.
