Just Geraniums - red and pink geranium floral

Just Geraniums                             oil                   9" x 11"
What would my summer be if I didn't paint geraniums at least once? I have been admiring them as I go out and around for sure. Today I just 'saw red' in a good way :) and it was time to paint some of my favorite flowers. This was the result...

Hill Horses - backlit horses western landscape

Hill Horses                                oil                        9" x 11"
I have never been a horse owner, but they always turn my head because of the wonderful rounded shapes and light that glints off their backs. This is a kind of unusual composition and I liked it in part, for that reason. I was in boat on the banks of the river, looking up at them. With the light coming through the trees, it created nice light and back-lit shapes.

Morning Ride

Morning Ride                      oil                    8"x 10"
While in Hawaii, I caught these two pedaling along. They seemed to be going no particular place and in no particular hurry, and I liked the rambling feel of it. We saw a lot of bikes while there and folks just seemed to be strolling, if you can do that while riding. The morning air was a little cool, but it always warmed up fast.

First Beach Walk - mom & child by the ocean

First Beach Walk                oil                 8" x 8"
I've been enjoying painting figures lately, and this takes me back to Hawaii where I saw these two. I wasn't as young as this little one when I first saw the ocean, but the feeling and smell of the salty water and air is not to be forgotten. Hope I captured a bit of it here.

Also, I've listed a few works for auction at my Daily Paintworks gallery- check them out HERE

Red Skirt - Basque folk costume, figure

Red Skirt              oil on linen             8"x 10"
My niece was again the model here and I actually had more of the chair and background in, but I wiped out some for correction and the more I eliminated..... the more I liked the figure and the red skirt. So, I kept it simple.

River's Edge - fly fishing & watching

River's Edge      oil on stretched canvas      8" x 10"

I'm quite a distance from the boat in this view, but I thought it still made a nice scene of the moving water and boat action. This is from Montana again on the Big Horn River.
On another note.... it's been a real pleasure co-hosting Artist's Helping Artists with Leslie Saeta this month, and today's show was no exception. Frank Serrano was very generous with his time and interesting stories about his own art and painting background and direction. Thanks Leslie and Frank! If you didn't catch it, you can listen or download HERE

Contemplation - a morning on the river oil fly fishing landscape

Contemplation                           oil                8" x 8"
This was a morning on the Bighorn river in Montana again and this fisherman seemed  pretty deep in thought while getting ready for his next cast. The light gave me an interesting pattern to work against blue and violet shadows.

Grackle!                     oil                 8" x 8"
My intention today was to paint a nice calm peaceful meadow scene...... But, then something came to mind that I was just more in a 'grackle' mood! This bird is one that some people seem to consider only pests and others admire them for their iridescent feathers and canny doings. I just knew when took this photo on the edge of the sunlit river, that I  loved the stark,
graphic quality, oh yeah there's that attitude too !

Great Blue Heron - heron oil painting

Great Blue Heron                      oil                    8" x 8"
I don't paint wildlife as a general rule, but kind of amazed myself when I got a shot of this Great Blue Heron. It rose out of the dry grass and bushes along the river bank and I caught it with a new camera we got just before the trip. I simplified  a lot throughout the foliage and liked the sort of 'hide and seek' quality of the heron against distant blues.

Cottonwoods Against A Blue Sky - oil landscape

Cottonwoods Against A Blue Sky             oil           7" x 7"
The Cottonwood trees along the river continue to intrigue me for their shapes and size. Here, I tried to concentrate on the big silhouette shapes for the most part, while massing in the greens on the light struck greens. This view is from a boat on the river, and I included the strip of blue water to balance out the sky and blue violets in the hills.

Light Rod-Big Fish! -fly fishing on the Big Horn river

Light Rod-Big Fish!                           oil                     7"x 9"
There was a lot of fishing and catching on the Big Horn during our trip this year. This is friend Steve R reeling in yet another one. It's hard to see the edges on this one, so click the pic or the View link below for a better idea of it. Not much time to post right now, but tomorrow you'll see more of those Cottonwoods pictured in the background.

Palouse Canola Fields- a summer landscape

Palouse Canola Fields             oil         9"x 7"
Yesterday, we finally made our way home and all through the day the skies built up with billowy cloud forms. Then, they would string out and disappear. It all had the added bonus of the bright yellow canola fields that could be seen in patches both large and small. This is one sketch from the day's journey. I forgot to mention on my last post that Leslie Saeta has kindly asked me to co-host Artists Helping Artists for the month of July. Our 1st show was "Christmas in July! " It was a lot of fun and I think we provided several ways for artists to plan ahead for the season & marketing their work. If you were a listener, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Tune in again Thursday for an interview with Ric Nagualero.

Big Sky - oil skyscape of Montana

Big Sky                       7" x 7"                   oil on panel
This is the second of my paintings from the Big Skies of Montana. Most of our days were pure blue with not a cloud in the sky, but the first day had these swooping over slivers of farm landscape. I tried to catch the idea with large brushstrokes and movement.
