Bighorn Cottonwoods - Montana landscape

Bighorn Cottonwoods                  oil          7"x 9"
I was out painting yesterday and this is the first of two. But, I have had limited posting opportunities (I am currently posting this from a bathroom- the only available polarized outlet and I'm out of juice)  At any rate, this is one of many groups of Cottonwood trees along the Bighorn river in Montana. The temperatures were more moderate and I found a shady spot, while visiting with random fly fishers as they made their way down to the river.

Painting, High Winds and Trout

Trout                                 8"x8"                                oil
Yesterday brought hot temps of 100 and high winds. So, when I went out to paint the Montana landscape, I was wilting pretty fast! The wind blew my easel over and I called it a day..... you win some, you lose some. Today, there was fishing on the Big Horn riiver and picture taking and I had time to paint this from  one of the morning's catch.

Rouge - Pink roses floral

Rouge    oil    9"x 7"
Well, it's a familiar story, but time is short right now and travelling again tomorrow. However, I do hope to paint and post on the road. We'll see........ Meanwhile I did have time to put together these romantic pink roses that I recently saw in Boise. The city seemed to be filled with them and I tried here to catch the color without being too sweet about every little edge and shape.

Basque Dancer - oil demonstration

slideshow painting demonstration- click to view
This is the demo I put together for my last post "Basque Dancer" and it begins, with the finished painting and then it starts with the block in. I didn't think to do this until I began taking photos at the block in stage. Previous to that, I had a loose brush drawing in umber.

Basque Dancer - DMB Challenge

Basque Dancer   oil    9" x 7"
This month's Diana Moses Botkin Challenge was 'chiaroscruro' as provided by Mark Adams. I probably didn't get quite enough drama in the darks here, but was happy with the painting. If you follow my posts, you have seen my model Alicia before. I also have a slideshow demo of this piece and will post it sometime this weekend or Monday. Meanwhile please enjoy the other challenge entries below.

Lifeguard - beach painting of Hawaii

Lifeguard                                 oil                                    7"x 9"
This is from Oahu again and gives you a glimpse of another beautiful beach. All the palms provided a great canopy of shade as they fanned us with ocean breezes. This is a deceptive scene, making it look like this guy has the easiest job in the world.... just sit back.... relax....oh wait..... there's that life saving part!

Common Goal - fly fishing, Kiribati

Common Goal      oil      8" x 7"
I'm back to fly fishing on this one and Steve is fishing with a guide this time. The guides are able to spot the nearly invisible fish and though it's hot, everyone covers up due to the intensity of the constant sun. It's interesting to try to change and contrast all the blues that are nearly the same value in a landscape/seascape like this. Even though the differences are subtle, I juxtaposed warm and cool changes throughout.

Wise Guy, colorful rooster oil

Wise Guy                   oil                                7" x 9"
I wanted to start out the week with a loose colorful approach to get my visual head going after a bit of a lull. In this rooster I used some back lighting to single out the form and some loose brushwork as well. With little exception, I used large brushes and also mixed a drop of poppyseed oil into my colors. That helped to give the paint less drag and a faster smooth feel. Very fun.....

untitled- Basque figure

Untitled- Basque figure   14" x 16"      oil
My schedule has been erratic lately and it's been difficult to find regular painting time. But, last week I started this painting and found some time to finish it today.  While in Boise, recently my niece Alicia, kindly agreed to pose for me in this traditional Basque costume. I have some others in mind for the weeks ahead but tomorrow hope to be more on the 'daily painting' schedule.
