Paris Flats - fly fishing in paradise

Paris Flats      8"x 8"        oil on linen panel
In keeping with yesterday's theme of being 'off the grid', Paris Flats is a fly fisherman's dream place on Christmas Island. It is near the equator, south of Hawaii. My husband and our friend Steve M. have recently returned from a trip there and came back having had a wonderful fishing experience and images to match. Another fine blue day in the tropics....

Off The Grid, tropical landscape in oil

Off The Grid      8" x 8"       oil on linen panel
Well, I've certainly been 'off the grid' as they say, with travelling to Hawaii, visits to family and a variety of things. I've been itching to dig into paint and this calming view reminded me that there are places where you just  sit and enjoy the breeze. It's good to go now and then, but it's good to be back too!

Hibiscus - orange floral of Hawaii

Hibiscus       8" x 6"       oil
Is there any more iconic Hawaiian flower than the Hibiscus? I knew I'd be painting one and these sherbet orange blossoms were some of my favorites. It's always great when you see an abundance of flowers everywhere that we see only in a greenhouse, or not at all. I loved this color against the deep blue greens.

Beach Hut - beach lifeguard station, Oahu

Beach Hut       9"x7"     oil
This is another view caught on Oahu. It's actually not a beach hut as such, but one of many lifeguard stations that you see on the beaches there. I liked the warmer violet shadows here and the patch of sunlit beach.

Packed and Unpacked- surf boards and summer gear ready to go!

Surf Ready  oil    8"x 6"
We are back home from Hawaii and I carved out just enough time to paint one of the first pictures I took there. The surf boards are wonderfully colorful and this little blue truck was packed to the gills. We'll see how tomorrow goes.....laundry awaits!

Pink Roses, Happy Mother's Day!

Pink Roses    oil     12"x 9"
Of course, as with most of you, I'm thinking of my mother today and she loved cranberry pinks. I think she would have approved of these. I should probably come up with a more inspired title but sometimes simple is just fine. Happy Mother's Day to all the great mom's out there !

DPW Interview

I am honored that Daily Paintworks kindly interviewed me for their site this week! It was fun and  a good focus for me to write a bit about the thoughtful questions Jennifer Marine posed. I do hope you enjoy it. I'll have new work to post for Mother's Day.

Window Box Floral II - second view of summer flowers

Window Box Floral II    8"x 10"    oil on panel
I got some wonderful comments and feedback about my last post and like Susan Roux's idea for developing the idea into a larger work. To that end, I thought I'd do some further brainstorming on composition and worked with this horizontal format. They have both been so much fun, I may work with a vertical as well!

Window Box Floral - colorful summer floral

Window Box Floral      oil       9" x 9"
This is also from Butchart Gardens where the green striped awnings add to the riot of flower color everywhere. The light provided a nice slash of bright color angling through the composition, though I may go back and tone down the brushwork some. It's one of those things that I need to take a fresh look at tomorrow.

White Roses - reflected whites,floral

White Roses     12"x 9"     oil on linen panel
I rarely paint roses for whatever reason, but I really wanted to work with reflected whites and these filled the bill. These are one of the beautiful varieties in the Butchart Gardens , Victoria B.C. I can't   say which, but trust me, they're all gorgeous! Jane, one of our traveling companions, cleverly thought to reserve a table for 'high tea' in a restaurant that overlooked the gardens, and it was heavenly. These roses say 'high tea' to me!
