Flower Market- colorful farmer's market visit

Flower Market                   oil                        9" x 9"
I don't usually post a photos I work from, but thought it might be an interesting change. Here you can see how I edit a picture and then (hopefully) strengthen the composition when working from a picture source. The tough part in most photos of this sort, is honing down too much information and trying to remember the feeling of the scene. The photo is below and it's from a Jackson, Wy. street market some time ago.

Wild Sky On The Palouse- northwest oil landscape

Wild Sky on the Palouse   oil      11" x 14"
I do like to paint cloud formations and wild skies like these, for the motion they create. Using descriptive brushwork and reflected color are always certainly a part of the appeal for me. The larger view will show that I've used bits of violet in the ground and some ochre tones in the clouds, to provide some unity between land and sky.

Golden - sunset over water

Golden        6"x 6"        oil
It's all about the color on this one, and though I've used this reference's always fun.
I think we're all looking forward to summer sunsets over the water and I hope to gather sketches and photos for several more.

Afternoon Horizon - landscape of billowing clouds & hillside

Afternoon Horizon  7"x 6"     oil
Today's painting is one of those sunny afternoons looking up toward a spring hillside. It's always interesting that a painting can come out of the most everyday kinds of views. Here, I focused on the billowy clouds and edge of land. And, using values, my intention is to guide the view up through to the sky.

River Shadows

River Shadows   6"x9"     oil
Here's a quiet little part of the river in the shadows. All you can hear is the water, as it rushes by. Enjoy this peaceful spot and have a wonderful weekend....

Spring Fields- bachelor buttons farm landscape painting

Spring Fields    oil    12" x 16"
This field with old farm outbuildings, is more blue than green with a profusion of Bachelor Buttons. They're in blues, violets and some pink and white as well. I've been wanting to work larger again and this is a step in that direction. You'll  see a fair amount of texture as you view it larger, though it's hard to see in this shot.

Polish, color, shopping and nail varnish

Polish    7"x 9"   oil
I never seem to be able to keep a manicure for more than about five hours! But, that doesn't stop me from looking at all the great chunks of color and glass whenever I pass the nail polish shelves. Just plain fun ...

Shopping Without A List- Diana Moses Botkin Challenge nge

Shopping Without A List     oil      Mary Maxam©  8" x 8"
This month's challenge subject for the DMB challenge is "shopping" as chosen by me :) And my painting....? Well, this how it is when I go to the store without any kind of list or organisation. I see this and that, respond to color and shapes and something fun like flowers and keep tossing things in. Then, of course one gets home and thinks "what's for dinner...?"
The other paintings in this challenge are so beautiful and creative, who knew there could be such a variety of takes on the subject? They're just too good to pick a favorite! I'll post updates as they come in.

"Laissez les bons temps rouler"   Mark Adams © oil  8"x 10"

"Shop 'til You Drop"  Diana Moses Botkin © oil  4"x 6"

"Petco With Poppy"   Vicki Ross ©  oil    8"x 10"

Hydrangea Floral

Hydrangea Floral     oil         8"x 8"
I was inspired by fellow painter Kathy Cousart to visit one of my favorite subjects, hydrangea, again. They have such wonderful, pastel color and reflected color in their light blossoms. And, the large fluffy tops always draw the eye. These were plants that I saw, waiting to decorate homes, just before Easter.

A Grape Bunch - garden grapes & compliments

A Grape Bunch    oil     10"x 7"
detail -  A Grape Bunch
I had this color scheme in mind's eye this morning, before I had a subject to go with it. It uses the compliments of red violet and yellow green. So, even when I searched and found my photo from many years ago, I painted this from my imagination for the most part. The brushwork got fairly thick at the end, and  hopefully the detail shot will help to show it.

Twists & Turns

Twists & Turns    oil     6"x 6"
The fascinating and endlessly varied shapes of trees provide wonderful subject matter any time of year. This is a tree I've painted before and the different directions and twists of it's limbs are what I like about it. It was a good day for me to paint while the guys our enjoying our blue skies, fishing. Hope your Easter has been  wonderful and your day had sunny turns and blue skies.

New Day

New Day    oil    9"x9 "
New Day - detail
So, after the rain and snow and cold, you finally come to the new day where the sky just looks.... hopeful. These clouds seemed to have their arms wide open, so to speak and it's been a while since I've worked with cloud forms and sweeping skies. And, I wanted to do something a bit different which I always enjoy seeing in other blogs, which is posting a detail shot.

Butter Yellow - First Daffodils of Spring

Butter Yellow   oil    10" x 8"
Here in North Idaho, we're still waiting for real spring, but there was certainly more of a spring feel during our  Boise visit. These first of the season daffodils were up in my sister's yard and accompanied a couple days of sunshine. I tried to capture that fresh light butter yellow of the blooms and not overdo the rest in too much detail.
