Teton Mountains, A Second View

Tetons, A Second View   9"x 9"   oil/linen panel
A few days ago I posted a look at the Teton mountains from a trip we'd taken. They continue to be in my mind's eye since then and I wanted to give it a second go. Once again, I tried for the feel, of looking up and into those inspiring peaks.

Bucket Bouquet and a painting give away!

Bucket Bouquet   10" x 8"    oil on canvas
Here's a flower sketch I did to really play with some fun color. It's been awhile since I've had a painting give-away and it just feels like time! So, if you'd like to have your name in the hat for this one, just click HERE and send and email with " painting give away" in the subject line. I will draw the winner from that group at the end of the month. Happy Monday :)

Late Day Light- fly fishing & painting techniques

Late Day Light    oil      10"x 8"
I wanted this painting to be about the warm light of a late summer day, so a cool color as underpainting was in my plan.  But, I also wanted to use pthalo blue which can be deadly, as it  tints every color applied on or around it so completely. My solution here was to use the pthalo in acrylic and let that dry, so that the top color in oil wouldn't be affected. I enjoyed working this way and will use it again soon I think . I took this shot while fishing at Yamsi ranch in Oregon.

View Of The Tetons - Jackson, Wyoming oil landscape

View Of The Tetons  oil    10" x 8"
One of my 'boards' or collections on Pinterest , I call 'places to go and go back to', and Jackson, Wyoming is certainly one of my picks. The ever present view of the Teton mountain range is beautiful at every turn. Then of course, there are a number of galleries and the excellent National Museum of Wildlife Art. If you get the chance, you'll want to make this area one of your picks too.

Paradise Valley Spring Creek

Paradise Valley Spring Creek   oil   11"x 14"
This is from one of the many spring creeks in the Paradise Valley of Montana. The area has many of these beautiful picture postcard types of scenes, and in the late afternoon, there is the addition of pale yellow light. It's a nice change from thinking about paperwork and snow. A calm scene to contemplate with swans drifting in the distance. Hope you enjoy it.

A Path From Last Fall

A Path From Last Fall  10" x 8"  oil /linen panel
So, while I continue today to toil away on taxes, I will post another painting from the past. It shows a golden path upward toward leafy fall trees. And, it's certainly one of the places and views I would rather be contemplating. But, the sooner I attack this, the sooner it's done- I'm having a very good attitude...don't you think? Good Luck with your own 2010 tallies  :)

Twin Blooms- sunflowers in blue shadows

Twin Blooms  20"x 16"  oil on canvas
This is a sunflower piece done awhile back but not posted, though it's hard to remember why it slipped by. I really went for the color here and put these flower heads against deep transparent blues for a strong contrast of warm and cool. I also used the contrast of transparency with opaque colors which is one of the effects I enjoy best. This painting is on stretched canvas and is in a gold plein air style frame.

St. Gertrude's Angel

St. Gertrude's Angel   9" x 9"  oil on linen panel
Last week, I was with a friend in Grangeville, and she kindly drove me around looking for interesting photos and generally seeing the sites. We went to St. Gertrude's Mission and though it was a gray day, took a few pictures of it's red domed architecture and a few of the statues in the front garden areas. The gray light created soft shadows and the curve of this angel's back, with her lowered gaze was a perfect little statement of grace. I tried to do it justice in this oil.

Salmon Sky

Salmon Sky   9"x9"   oil
Here's a sweeping sky that has just that hint of salmon color underneath the clouds. The foreground is a lead in to ... more country and clouds...a little town...a distant tree line...or just exactly what you want it to be. Have fun imagining...

Mr. Lucky, A handsome rooster in oil

Mr. Lucky  9"x 9"  oil
Here is one of my favorite roosters to paint, because no matter what, he always makes a good picture. Must be the confidence stance, posing and golden feathers. When my husband titled this Mr. Lucky , I liked it right off...maybe this guy's  lucky just to be born handsome!

Flower Bench

Flower Bench  14"x 11"  oil
Thanks Susan Roux for the title to yesterday's fly fishing painting "Wading and Waiting"-very clever :)
These geraniums stood outside a cafe on a most wonderful blue enameled  bench seat and the complimentary color scheme really said 'paint me!' It was a profusion of flowers, but I wanted the focus to be on the idea of the color scheme and the abundance, rather than each flower separately.

Wading and Waiting

Fly Fisherman- untitled  14" x 10" oil
Today is one of those busy days where my mind in so occupied with other things, I'm drawing a blank on a title. I will certainly take suggestions for those with the creative spark with words right now! The painting here was about the harmony of blues and greens in this small canyon and the position of the rod and figure drawing me into the composition. I'm out of time for right now, but hope to post again toward the end of the week. 'til then... hope you're having a good week.

Tofino Fishing Boat

Tofino Fishing Boat 12"x10" oil
When I worked with a boat image from Tofino in B.C. last week, I came across a picture I took of a fishing boat late in the day. We were fishing close by and I snapped it with the light in mind. The light has that pinky-peachy cast that so reminds me of being on the ocean at certain times . I suggested a figure probably pulling in lines at the end of the day. If you like paintings of cycling and bikes, check out http://www.velokos.com/bikeart.php , where I have a post along with other artists.

Rock Creek, fly fishing, Moldy Chum and red sleeves

Rock Creek   10" x 8"   oil on panel
Today my work was featured on Moldy Chum :) ... and , I know what you're thinking.... "uh, Mary are you sure this is a good thing?!?" Well, the answer is definitely "yes!"  If you are into fly fishing, you will know that they are a 'go to site' for fly fishermen and women. They're fascinating and information filled place to see and read about the subject. This painting is from Rock Creek in Montana and the red sleeves  were the visual excitement used against the landscape. Also, the light plays a big role too and I had a lot of fun with it.
