High Water

High Water   9x9"  oil
Changing it up again with a few days of flyfishing to come. I was lucky that friend, Steve M came through with some recent sources and I'm mulling over some photos I took of my nephews fishing last week.

Lemon Branch

Lemon Branch  9:x 9"  oil on linen panel
Here is a sort of companion piece to my last post and once again I combined a light loose brushwork with tighter work on the lemons in the front. Whenever, I paint using alot of yellow it reminds me of a watercolor show I was very happy to get into many years ago. I always remember the jurors critique...which was that he chose the piece for it's compositon, but also because he thought a predominant yellow palette one of the most challenging to work with. Hope I managed again here... ;)

An Apple A Day ?-oil painting of garden apple

An Apple A Day  7.5 x 8  oil on linen
I don't know if I could paint an apple every day, but I always enjoy what I call a natural still life, like this. Every now and then I have the itch to change things up and paint a particular subject tighter, or paint looser or combine those two for focus. Here is the 3rd option which is my favorite, meaning that while the apple is in focus, I've only suggested the branches and other shapes surrounding it. This is on a very fine linen that allows me to paint with careful edges along with loose brushwork when I choose.

Palouse Hills Landscape - oil painting

Palouse Hills Landscape  8"x7.5" oil on linen
I've talked about and painted the rolling hills of the Palouse farmland before and this is another view. It is ever changing as you travel up and down and around the many road curves. This is how it appeared just a couple weeks ago with a swirling sky above.

The Constant Gardener

The Constant Gardener  6"x6"  oil on stretched linen
I knew I would be painting a figure today, but instead of fishing, he turned out to be gardening. And, the title using 'constant" is apt. Whenever I'm at Manito gardens, I see his cowboy hat bowed over whatever the day's neverending job.

Chiniak Bay- fly fishing in Alaska

Chiniak Bay  6"x 8" oil
I've been looking at water and fly fishing again as subject matter and recalled this photo from Kodiak, Ak. There is a cool bright light there that I tried to capture, along with this fisherman, intent on the next salmon catch. I enjoyed the landscape there alot, and there is quite a bit of variety which I didn't expect.

Coeur d'Alene River View

Coeur d'Alene River View  7"x9"  oil
Yesterday we got away to the Coeur d'Alene River and I had almost forgotten what a pretty river it is. As I walked along the rocky banks, I saw this view that had a light path up toward the rocky outcrop on the left. I like the color and composition and knew it was just the compostition I'd been looking for.

Bend In The Road

Bend In The Road  8"x8"   oil
Here's the road as it stretched out before us last week, while traveling. It's a powerful sky, and a bending path, that continued to beckon us toward to next turn.

I am happy and proud to announce that I've been invited to join Daily Painters, one of the first and certainly foremost of artist's online group galleries. You'll enjoy your visit to the gallery. There is no end of creative works posted daily. This is a sunset broadly taken from recent travels, the blue sky turned a soft green shade in the cast of gold light.

Judy's Peonies

Judy's Peonies  8"x 10"  oil
Ok, so I promise I won't go on too much about peonies this time. But, when my friend Judy, who knows my weakness for them, sends wonderful pictures of her garden...well, how can I resist? I tend to fill the composition when I paint them, because there is just no way I can see them in my mind's eye as small or timid. Thanks Judy ; )

Season Of Gold

Season Of Gold  10"x8"  oil
I've been taking the long view in paintings lately, and looking up into some wild skies. But, all the spring rain brought late wildflowers and I am taking a different turn here to focus on the color in the fields. These look a bit like Coreopsis, but the petals are smaller and they don't have the regularity of the perfect store or garden bouquet. They make great sparks of color in the fields even now when they are usually gone.

Stormy re-post

Moving Through  9x9"  oil
We are now catching up from travels and tomorrow I hope to paint ( today being catch-up and laundry)  I am re-posting this work which so reminds me of our recent travels. This was actually painted in B.C., where once again, I was captivated by the horizon and sky.

Blue Evening

Blue Evening   8"x10"  oil
This is from one of our evenings heading toward Fort Smith, Montana. The evening was finally cooling off after high temps, and all the cool blues were a nice visual relief as well. At this point there was only the slightest bit of pink in the clouds and a warmth to all the landscape greens.
