Last of the Season

Last of the Season         6"x6"                oil on panel     $150
Just before it snowed, last week, we emptied the flower boxes from the windows at the front of our house. Of course, there were just these last two that were hanging on despite the cold. I couldn't just throw them out, so stuck them in a mason jar and had to paint that last bit of geranium red, for this year.

I haven't posted a demo for awhile and have been working on two larger paintings for an art auction that will take place in February to benefit the Museum of Arts and Culture (the MAC) in Spokane. Step one involves figuring out the value structure of the painting. Step two shows a transparent wash of a red-violet mix. I used this to provide a warmer undertone, yet one that I could still contrast with the colors I was working toward for the finished work. Step three is the block in of main colors, most of these were a semi-opaque mix, where bits of the violet show underneath. The finish is the process of additional opaque color, details, introducing sharper contrasts in value, color and edges.

South for the Winter ?

South for the Winter ?     6"x6"   oil
The leafless trees have me noticing bare little bird houses that will be empty 'til spring.
Wonder if the tenants took the whirligig flight, south for the winter ?

Weathering Well

Weathering Well    6x6"    oil
Here's another view of the barn from my last post. I may paint one more as I've been so attracted to the weathered rose color.  We'll probably get snow this week, so I'll have to go see what the effect is against a white ground, soon.

Shadowed Barn

Shadowed Barn          10"x8"   oil
This barn is one that is close by and it is weathering to a more beautiful shade of rose every year. I thought I'd try to catch some of the subtle color in it this season. One of these days, I'm afraid I'll pass by and it will have fallen down completely!

Fall Shadows

Fall Shadows     10"x 8"         oil on canvas  sold
This was a view that looked down a leafy path and another view of fall. I am very late in posting the last winner of my painting give - away, drawn at the end of October. The drawing for Cloudscape II  was follower Colleen Proppe who is an artist with a lively blog of her own. I am mulling over my next painting give away and will keep you posted.

Fall Color II

Fall Color II    12"x 9"   oil
Here's another take on fall color. quieter and grayer on an overcast day. The rusty tones, in and amongst the dying ochre grasses provided good contrast. The lead in of water reminds me of moving into another season in our ever changing lives.
