Spring Roses

Spring Roses   12"x 12"   oil
Even with our rainy weather, I've noticed a few of these bushes here and there that have roses in bloom. I'm not enough of a gardener to know a name for them. My challenge in the painting, was not to paint EVERY rose I saw and try to simplify the value pattern and brushwork. It was fun to try this, and overall I like the effect.

Nasturtium Skirts

Nasturtium Skirts  12"x 12"   oil
A friend clued me in to hanging baskets of Nasturtiums at a garden store. But, when I got there, they had just sold the last one. I bought a single plant though and when I got it home, the sun hit just right to create a kind of wild shadow pattern.

Fav 15% - Building Up

Building Up   14"x 11"   oil
I am happy to hear today that my painting "Building Up" (previously posted) has been selected for the FAV 15%  in April's Fine Arts Online competition. You can see many wonderful entries (and enter the competition) at  .
I heard from the winner of my painting give away and it is Melanie Harbin of South Carolina. She is an artist herself, and is currently building her website. So, when it's up and going, I will certainly pass along that web address. Her painting is on it's way to her and I will put together another drawing sometime soon.

Cherry Blossoms

Cherry Blossoms   9"x 9"   oil SOLD
We have a cherry tree in the back yard and this is the best year we've had yet for blossoms. They kind of float around in even a small breeze and I tried to capture the way the petals catch the light and then float back into shadow.
On another note... as promised, the drawing was today, for my painting give-away (see my April 24th post). I have emailed the winner. Once I hear from them, I will post the details. Keep watching, I'm planning to do another give-away in the not too distant future...

Market Flowers

Market Flowers 12"x 12" oil
Yesterday I went to the Farmer's Market and people were buying up flower flats right and left. These are Coreopsis and they stretch up on spindly flower heads, easily catching my attention.

The Next Day

The Next Day    12"x 12"    oil      sold
It is the day after our string of storms that passed through and today we have billowy clouds. I enjoyed just leaving the clouds with thick paint and didn't do much blending here. Pin It

Spring Storm

Spring Storm    9"x 9"    oil     sold
We've had some dramatic skies lately with spring storms rolling through. I'm always intriqued by the little patches light on the ground and the big sweep of the shapes and color.

Sweet Sky

Sweet Sky    20"x 16"   oil
I was ready for a whole new palette today and had a lot of fun with this sky. I call it Sweet Sky because the clouds reminded me of cotton candy. So, yeah, I pushed the color, but just couldn't resist doing so. I also re-posted Birdhouse, from a couple of days ago, and am happier with the adjustment in reds and a few of the shapes on that one.

Jo's Garden Gnome

Jo's Garden Gnome  8"x 11"   oil
This is a little concrete gnome that "fishes"on a rock, in a friend's garden, amid her Iris. He has a little stick poked into his hands for the fishing pole. Thanks Linda and Sandy for your comments yesterday. I was kind of color blind by the end of it, because I didn't feel I'd hit the right note in the reds. I think it's one I'll have to keep pondering for awhile. It was good to hear that you liked it.

Birdhouse   14"x 11"   oil
This is the birdhouse at our front door. However, As I've been painting instead of planting, the geraniums are from last year's photo! They should be making a re-appearance in about a week :)

Scarlet 10" x 8" oil on linen    sold
This is a little sketch I re-painted and is similar to a previous post. I used a different palette, but similar composition. It's that time of year when everywhere I go I'm seeing geranium reds. In a subject like this, it's hard for me to choose what to paint, because the red gets so dazzling! As with the other, I used the shape of this single stem for a focal point.

Demo - Nest   20"x 20" oil on gessoed hardboard

We've been offline for a couple days, but now I'm finally able to post this demo. In any event, this began with a wash of oms, indian yellow and cad red. My second step was to sketch in the basics of the composition with burnt umber. I then layed in the local colors for the nest and eggs. Following that, I deveolped some of  the brushwork that I wanted to indicate for movement and direction. I then painted the eggs into better forms by modulating the values. Next, I continued to layout the broad idea for both color and value patterns throughout the rest of the painting. My last steps were to develop edges and a few details to guide the eye toward the nest, but not create too much of a hard bullseye effect.
