The Promise of Packages

The Promise of Packages 12"x12"  oil
Is there anything more fun than just wondering what's inside a wrapped package? I ran across these boxes setting on curls of paper and ribbons. It was hard to know where to stop with defining edges. I could have gone on and on, but decided it was more about the idea than the specific shapes.

Oh, those mannequins with their haughty stares! They do catch my eye though, along with  her red earring and lips.

If you saw yesterday's post you'll understand the title. Another bit of fun...while still going for a painterly feel.

Fabulosity And Her Court  8"x8"  oil
Not to worry, you haven't stumbled onto a different blog! I've always like coming across still life and various scenes that are just waiting to be painted and these heels just called out to me.

Garden Prep

Garden Prep   12"x 9"  oil
With good weather, there are a lot of little scenes like this around town....evidence that people are breaking out the tools to do some gardening. This little garden shed and the wheelbarrow seemed to be standing ready for the coming job. I pushed the color a bit, but couldn't resist having fun with the color scheme.

Building Up II

Building Up II  14" x 11"  oil sold
This is one I had finished, then  re-worked a bit. The farm buildings were too prominent initially, but I wanted to focus on the light and sky. Now, I think it's about right.

Spring Landscape II

Spring Landscape II   10x8" oil
Here's another view similar to yesterday's post. If I find time, I'll be going back in for a few more hard edges and focus.

Spring landscape

Spring Landscape  8"x8"  oil
I delivered work to Entree Gallery at Priest Lake on Saturday. That's about a 2 hour drive from me and I took some pictures on the way. It was overcast, and there were a lot of tall grasses and little spring creeks here and there. This is from that day.

Blue II

Blue II   8"x11"   oil
Here's a second version yesterday's Blue Bike. This is more of a loose sketch, but I think it's a better composition.

Blue Bike

Blue Bike  11"x14"  oil
I spotted this bike waiting for it's rider one day and painted it from the photo I took. I'd like to re-paint this however, and re-arange it to push everthing to the left for a better composition. We'll see.....

Little Brown Hen

Little Brown Hen   14"x11"  oil sold
I like the softness of this painting, but I may still go back into it as the overall values are a bit dark.
I noticed a really sharp edge pointing right off the page of yesterday's posting, "Orange Compliments", which was distracting. So, I softened that edge today and it brought my eye back into the composition more effectively. I've now reposted it.

Carol Marine workshop & Orange Compliments

Orange Compliments   8"x5"  oil
This is one of the paintings I started at the workshop, but only finished half of it there. Today, I tried to remember what I was going for and finished it off, keeping in mind some principles stressed in class. I tried for dominance in color, (blue) shapes, (round) and values (middle-dark-light).The color scheme is complimentary. She is a well organised teacher with good notes and references, all printed up for you! Carol has a winning personality and is easy to talk to. Her demos (one each day) are thoughtful and precise. I really admire her brushwork and clean, clear, color, and that is, what I take most from the workshop. If you are an experienced painter, not all the information is new. However, her concise approach helps to "cut to the chase" and review the basics in an interesting way. Carol's workshop is well worth it. I'd love to hear from others who've taken her classes to add your thoughts. ....

Desert Flowers

Desert Flowers 14"x 11" oil
I got back late yesterday, so haven't had time to paint yet. This is one that I painted in the desert, about a half hour outside the Scottsdale AZ. area, but have never posted. I hope to be able to get back to my studio very soon and talk a bit about the Carol Marine workshop then. It was really good and she's a generous and talented teacher.

Windblown Balsam

Windblown Balsam    12"x 9"
This is a plein aire painting done previously, but as long as I have the sunflower thing going.......
this was a really windy day in B.C. and the I began by trying to take my time, but had to hurry before everything tipped over. I think the flower petals describe it pretty well.

Sunflower Secrets

Sunflower Secrets   8"x6"  oil
I planned for these two to be looking as though they were engaged in a little conversation. But, even better, it looks like the one below is listening to a secret being told by a gossipy friend :)
