Red Skirted Hollyhocks

Red Skirted Hollyhocks  10" x 8" oil
Another change of pace, as the day is sunny and I'm looking forward to spring color. These are the end of my Hollyhocks last year. Some bug got to them, and I will have to wait a long while before I get nice ones again, I think. They used to grow wild in the alley where I was a kid, and I remember plucking them off and making little doll figures from the flower "skirts".

The Boss

The Boss   oil  14"x 11"    sold
This rooster ended up looking like he was taking charge somehow... so the title seemed right. I've been going for a kind of looseness in the brushwork with just enough edge detail to draw attention to the colorful feathers.

This was a fun splash of color, trying to get across a personality for this wild bird.

Geranium Sketch

Geranium Sketch  oil 12"x9"
Geraniums are one of my "go to" subjects when I just have to use some strong color. I'll be painting a few of these type sketches in the next few days.

Minnie Lake Ranch

Minnie Lake Ranch  oil   9"x 9"
This is a little ranch about a half mile from my last post "Building Up". As promised , this is a re-post of yesterday's painting and it's a much better picture of it.

Building Up

Building Up  oil   11"x 14"
As I am framing right now instead of painting, I will post this plein aire painting done last spring. The clouds were building all afternoon and sure enough, we had rain by dinner. It was interesting to watch the sky progress through it's myriad of wild shapes throughout the day. This was at Douglas Lake Ranch in B.C. Canada.

King of the Yard

King of the Yard   oil  11"x 14"
This is a rooster painted awhile ago, but done using the same process as the hen posted yesterday. They're a good subject to paint, I have a few more references, but need to go hunt out a farm for more :)
