Demo oil, - Fancy Hen

Another demo, this time of a little hen that had such a decorative feather pattern, I couldn't resist.
Step 1-I first layed in a thin warm gray wash on the board to work off of. It was very general and didn't get photograhed. Then I put down initial shapes and value pattern in thin paint..

Step 2 - Brighter color and thicker paint to begin building more definition and contrast.
Step 3 - I increased the values and definition here, but I see that the color is to cool on the top feathers of the hen.

Step 4 - The finish includes loose scratching and brushwork into the ground and grass area. Also, a warmer white on the top feathers. The black feathers need to be a warmer black though and i may re-post a finish tomorrow with that change.

Big Horn Landscape

Big Horn Landscape   oil   9"x 9"   sold
This is from a sketch done around the Big Horn River in Montana. I'm always drawn to the tree masses in that landscape, in fields and all along the Big Horn River. My challenge here was to limit my palette, highlight the shapes of the trees and still describe the soft light of late day.

Continuing the demo from yesterday, this re-draw in paint, establishes shapes more clearly.

Step 5 - local colors are added in heavier paint.

Step 6 - paint is applied throughout the composition, adjustments are made to values, colors, shapes and edges.

Demonstration - Ruby Geraniums

Ruby Geraniums oil 9"x 9"
This is a previous post and one which I've meant to develop into a larger painting. I am starting that larger work today and thought I would post the steps taken to develop the painting over the next 2 or 3 days.

This is the first step in this new work. Just a light wash in of warm tones, establishing the 2 basic value areas. It measures 20" sq. and is on a prepared panel that has been lightly sanded.

Step 2 is a light charcoal drawing to establish the big shapes

Step 3- a more vibrant wash in to establish the color scheme
more tomorrow...

Apple Branch

Apple Branch   10"x 8" oil
I needed a change of pace and found it in a photo and sketch I had from summer. I've always enjoyed painting branches with fruit or flowers in a natural setting and these were no exception.

For A Valentine?

For A Valentine?  oil  9"x 9"
My husband spotted this in a bakery case while grocery shopping and when I saw it, I knew I had to paint it. I saw the  heart shapes of the strawberries, were repeated in the heart shape of, and in, the chocolate cup, so that was the basis for the title.

Two Forks Please

Two Forks Please   oil    14"x 11"
I don't usually take pictures of the food when we go out, but this was a vacation and I had my camera with me. We were in Tofino on Vancouver Island and this cheesecake at our patio table caught the early evening light. It raced across the plate, making this already beautiful dessert, even more so. It's been in the back of my mind as a painting possibility for awhiile.....enjoy.

"got mmmoooo?"

"got mmmoooo?"  9"x 9" oil
This little milk pitcher was a gift from my sister-in-law and reminds me so much of one that an aunt had. I remember it from when I was a kid. I thought it was a good companion for this chocolate doughnut.

Reflected Sky

Reflected Sky oil 9"x 9"
The idea here was to create a sky view presented as a water reflection. I wish I were seeing these blue skies out the window today, but no such luck. I like the thick paint on this one, though the photo doesn't quite show it.
